I told my teacher “I don’t know what I could do for you, but know that I offer nothing but endless support for you. I’m so terribly sorry that something so tragic had to happen to a place even dearer to your heart than mine. You and your family continue to be in my thoughts and prayers, and I pray for the day when we as a nation may rise above this heartbreaking blow.”
and then I’m sure you could find a way to make the last part more relevant to the situation
